Halfway between Leicester and Coventry, Hinckley is a market town known for its hosiery industry. By the end of the 19th century, Hickley was renowned for its significant hosiery production. It also became home to the first framework knitting machine in the country, thanks to Joseph Lliffe, who brought the equipment over to the town during the 17th century.
Despite the hosiery industry diminishing in size throughout the area after the Second World War, the town is still known for its textile factories and subsequent production. Although, Hinckley is also home to Ultima Sports Limited, a sports car manufacturer and it stands to be one of the oldest family-owned Ford Motor Dealerships in Britain.
Since 1990, Hinckley has also been home to Triumph Motorcycles Limited and it’s reported that the company is still thriving. So much so, in the summer of 2017, Triumph set about reopening the onsite visitor centre and small restaurant (called ‘1902’ as that was the year Triumph was founded), with a view to be open six days a week.
